Biography

Ali was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1996. He immigrated to the United States in 2010, and went on to complete his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo in Spring of 2018, with Magna Cum Laude distinction. Towards his B.S., Ali spent the majority of his undergraduate research career at the University at Buffalo Nanosatellite Laboratory working under Dr. John L. Crassidis. He served as the communications subsystem lead engineer for the laboratory’s first satellite GLADOS, in addition to supporting LINKSAT (antenna design) and FALCON (optical communication system design). His industry experience includes interning at Northrop Grumman Space Systems where he developed a tool to solve crosslink satellite communication problems. He then interned at NASA Kennedy Space Center where he was a part of the avionics team designing analog circuit boards for lunar missions. Ali also served as an intern at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, working on developing control systems for terahertz electronics.

During his last undergraduate semester, he started his M.S. coursework and research at UB under the guidance of Dr. Josep Jornet. He spent a semester abroad at Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), taking courses in areas of nano-photonics and space communications. His current research interests include terahertz space antennas, electronics, and system design for communications and sensing.

Ali has written a short book to serve as a step-by-step guide for undergraduate electrical engineering students.
